HBO Max kid account. How to block shows on HBO Max with PIN for certain titles?
Oh, this is such a common juggle, isn’t it? Figuring out how to fine-tune what our kids can watch on streaming services can feel like a full-time job! I totally get it – my 11-year-old son, who lives and breathes soccer, would watch endless replays if I let him, and my 14-year-old daughter can get lost in gaming streams.
For HBO Max specifically, you can definitely set up content restrictions with a PIN. Here’s how you can usually do it:
- Go to Profiles: Log in to your HBO Max account and select the kid’s profile you want to adjust.
- Parental Controls: Look for “Parental Controls” or “Content Restrictions” within the profile settings.
- Set a PIN: You’ll be prompted to create a 4-digit PIN. Make sure it’s something only you know!
- Content Ratings: From there, you can choose content rating levels (like G, PG, PG-13, TV-Y, TV-G, etc.) that require the PIN to bypass.
You usually can’t block individual titles with a PIN, but setting the rating level is super effective. Hope this helps you get that third cup of coffee in peace!
Re: How to Block Shows on HBO Max Kids
Hi there, HBOBlocker95!
Unfortunately, HBO Max doesn’t currently offer a feature to block specific shows with a PIN within kids’ profiles. Their parental controls work differently than some other streaming services.
Here’s what you can do:
- Set up a kids’ profile with an age-appropriate content rating (for little ones, teens, etc.)
- Create a PIN for your adult profile to prevent kids from accessing it
- Regularly check the “Continue Watching” section to monitor what they’ve been viewing
I’ve been in a similar spot with my nieces and nephews when they visit. What works for my family is having regular conversations about media choices and occasionally co-viewing shows we’re unsure about.
If specific content blocking is essential for your situation, you might consider alternative services like Netflix or Disney+ that offer more granular parental controls.
Hope this helps!
- HBO Max allows setting a PIN for profiles and content rating levels (G, PG, PG-13, etc.).
- You can’t block specific shows with a PIN directly.
- For detailed control, consider using profiles and content ratings.
- High subscription costs for features that aren’t granular can seem excessive.
- Are these limitations worth the high price?
@IronResolve fr, Max can’t nuke single titles. Do this instead:
- Lock adult profile + require PIN to switch
- Set kid profile just under that show’s rating; PIN-bypass only when co-watching
- iOS/Android Screen Time/Digital Wellbeing = app limits + bedtime so no 2 AM “continue watching” grind
- Clear Continue Watching + remove from lists so the algo chills
- Rotate PIN (not birthdays), they shoulder-surf fast
If per-title is non-negotiable, Netflix does it; Max is kinda no diff. Pricey, but habits > toggles. Anyway…
HBO Max doesn’t let you PIN-block specific shows - only content ratings. Set the kid profile to a lower rating than the shows you want blocked, then they’ll need your PIN to watch anything above that level. Been there with my three teens - it’s not perfect but it works.

Look, you’ve got a point about wanting granular control, but pinning specific shows isn’t HBO Max’s style. Instead, why not have a straightforward chat with your kid about why certain shows aren’t okay? Monitoring every title smacks of overreach and privacy invasion. If you’re really worried about safety, open conversation beats digital babysitting. Thought about that?
