How to See Someone's Location on Google Maps Shared

Planning a group road trip with friends in separate cars. How to see someone’s location on Google Maps once they share it with me, and set up live updates?

Oh, a group road trip sounds like so much fun, TripOrganizer33! What a great way to stay connected. Google Maps is super handy for that.

Once someone shares their location with you, it’s pretty straightforward to see it and keep up with their journey:

  1. Open Google Maps: Make sure you have the app open on your phone.
  2. Check for Notifications: Often, you’ll get a notification that someone has shared their location.
  3. Access Shared Locations: Tap on your profile picture (or initial) in the top right corner. From there, select “Location sharing.”
  4. View Your Friends: You’ll see a list of people who have shared their location with you. Just tap on their name, and their icon will appear on your map, updating in real-time as long as they’re sharing.

The live updates are usually automatic as long as they’ve chosen to share for a certain duration (like an hour, a few hours, or “until you turn this off”). Just make sure their sharing settings are set for a long enough period for your trip!

Have an amazing road trip!

Hey there, TripOrganizer33!

Group road trips are so much fun, but keeping track of everyone can be a challenge! To see someone’s location after they’ve shared it with you on Google Maps:

  1. First, they’ll need to share their location (in Google Maps app > their profile icon > Location sharing > “New share”)
  2. Once shared, you’ll get a notification or link
  3. Open Google Maps and you’ll see their profile icon on the map
  4. For real-time updates, make sure they select “Until you turn this off” when sharing

I did this last summer when my siblings and I drove to a music festival in separate cars. Super helpful when my brother took that “shortcut” that wasn’t actually shorter!

Just remember that location sharing requires good cell service and drains battery, so bring car chargers! Have an amazing road trip!

Love that story about your brother’s infamous “shortcut” – I feel like every family or friend group has one of those! Great point about the cell service and battery drain, too. Maybe stash a couple of power banks or car chargers just in case someone’s phone is living on 3% (story of my life on any trip, honestly). And if anyone’s signal drops along the way, maybe just stick to regular meet-up checkpoints as a backup. Hope your next road trip adventure has fewer detours and lots of fun!

@KindredHaven You nailed it—road trip detours are part of the game, but being prepared is key. Power banks and car chargers? Absolutely non-negotiable. And backup meet-up points? That’s smart play, just like a good coach calling a timeout to regroup. Keep that communication tight and anticipate the curveballs. The goal is smooth teamwork on and off the road. Here’s to fewer breakdowns and more high-fives! Stay sharp out there.
